Chevening 2021-2022

Pierre Michel RALAIVELO is the first Malagasy aquatic veterinarian. Ten years after graduating as a veterinarian while serving the fisheries and aquaculture sector, he was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, which enabled him to pursue an MSc in Aquatic Veterinary Studies at University of Stirling.

Upon returning to Madagascar, he chose to work in aquaculture in order to put into practice the knowledge and skills he had acquired overseas. Since then, he has combined expertise in quality management, international standard and certification, aquatic animal health and welfare, and biosecurity within a company exporting farmed shrimp from Madagascar,

At the same time, he began a PhD at the Faculty of Science of University of Antananarivo, focusing on the topic: “Health Risk Analysis in Aquaculture: A Model for the Malagasy Context.

His main goal is to help equip Madagascar with a fit-for-purpose strategy for the biosecurity and sustainability of the aquaculture sector.
